Marriage in the UK

05.05.2015

In order to get married in UK please check with the authority where you have planned to get married (register office, church) which documents are required.

In UK you might be asked to prove that there are no obstacles by Estonian law for you to get married. The document is called a Certificate of No Impediment. Estonian citizens who have registered their place of residency to UK can apply for the certificate from the Embassy by post. Please fill out the following application form and send it to us together with a copy of your and your future spouse’s passport or ID-card, state fee £19 by Postal Order (cheque from a post office; payable to Estonian Embassy). According to the Estonian regulations the certificate will expire if the marriage is not contracted within six months after the certificate has been issued.

In case you are required to submit your Estonian birth certificate and divorce certificate you can apply for these documents in English from the Embassy by post. For additional info click here.

After getting married in UK you need to send your original marriage certificate together with your and your spouse’s passport copy to our Embassy, so that we can update your marital status in the Estonian Population Register.

After marriage in UK you have the right to keep your old surname or take your spouse’s surname within 1 year after the marriage. You can apply for a new passport/ID-card with your spouse’s surname by submitting your marriage certificate and copy of your spouse’s passport/ID-card. In order to make changes more than 1 year after the marriage or to make any other changes to your name (take both surnames or change your first name) you need to apply for a change of name (deed poll). For additional info click here.

In case you would like to submit your UK marriage certificate (and new passport and ID-card application) in Estonia, please make sure that you legalise your marriage certificate at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what-we-do/services-we-deliver/legal-services/Legalisation/.
